Doctors Opposing Circumcision

Professor George C. Denniston, M.D., M.P.H., founded Doctors Opposing Circumcision (DOC) in 1995 to protect the normal genitalia of infants and discourage their unnecessary non-therapeutic surgical modification for cultural reasons.

DOC is a non-profit membership corporation with an international set of members from six continents. DOC is a Washington corporation, which maintains its international headquarters in Seattle, Washington, USA, overlooking beautiful Puget Sound. We provide a voice for physicians who oppose the practice of child circumcision in accordance with our Mission Statement.

DOC's international headquarters are located in:

Suite 42
2442 NW Market Street
Seattle, Washington 98107-4137

DOC is a non-profit I.R.C. 501(c)3 non-governmental organization (NGO). Contributions are tax-deductible.

We exist to share the awareness that human genitals have been designed correctly by millions of years of evolution.

DOC is a member of other organizations:

We also collaborate with other organizations to advance genital integrity, human rights, and general wellbeing of children. DOC supports and promotes the general human rights of children enunciated by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966) and the additional special human rights of children enunciated by the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). We support and promote the UNESCO Declaration on Human Rights and Biomedicine (2005) with special application to vulnerable children.

We equally oppose female circumcision, as females have the same rights to genital integrity as males.

We acknowledge the right of each individual to decide for herself or himself whether or not to go through life with incomplete genitalia. Therefore, we do not oppose adult circumcision of either gender, providing that the adult requests it only after fully informed consent.

We approve religious circumcision, provided that the individual to be circumcised is an adult who can decide for him or herself after being fully informed of the anatomical and functional sacrifice such rituals entail.

We believe that male neonatal circumcision, by its inherent nature, violates laws and bioethical guidelines that have been enacted for the protection of children. We believe that male children are entitled to the same, equal protection as females receive under international law, U.S. national law, and the laws of other nations.

We do not disclose our membership list in order to protect our members from economic pressure by those in the medical community who want to preserve an entrenched but outmoded non-therapeutic and medically-unnecessary surgical operation, which usually produces a large fee when performed. We speak for those members.
